OneIT Update and Leadership Announcements
August 02, 2017
Dear ITS Staff,
We want to update you on the main recommendations of the overall OneIT Initiative. We know you have been waiting to learn more about the recommendations.
Today, we are announcing a new leadership structure that balances campus needs and leverages scale through a shared services model. It also includes a unified budget and common services to support the University of Nebraska. Other updates related to the Budget Response Team process university-wide will come later today.
As a reminder, later today at 3 p.m. an all-ITS video conference will take place to address any questions and help identify some of the next steps of the process.
Here's what you need to know related to ITS and the OneIT Initiative:
Effective today, Vice President of IT, Mark Askren, has named UNO CIO Bret Blackman Associate Vice President and UNK CIO Deb Schroeder, Assistant Vice President, reporting to Mark. Mark, Bret and Deb will continue to retain their CIO leadership roles along with campus reporting structures.
Additionally, five Assistant Vice Presidents, reporting to Mark, have been named in the areas of shared services:
- IT Strategy and Planning: Kimberly Harper
- Client Services: Neil Wineman
- Enterprise Services: Don Mihulka
- Security Services: Rick Haugerud
- Infrastructure Services: Michael Ruhrdanz
It's also important to note that campus-specific services will retain their reporting relationships to the respective CIO. These are not new positions, but new responsibilities within the University of Nebraska ITS leadership team.
We expect to save $1.6 million in the 2017-18 year, a majority of which will come from retirements and attrition. That $1.6 million will contribute to the $6 million the ITS Budget Response Team has requested from us over the next two years.
The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) is currently integrating with Nebraska Medicine, and ITS will work very closely with that new team on procurement and standardized technologies as well.
We know you will have more questions. We know there is still much to be built and brought together under this new leadership structure. We appreciate the leadership provided by the steering and core teams, as well as those participating on the service teams.
This will take time and hard work but will help University of Nebraska's students, faculty and staff and transform the institution. Please continue to send us your feedback and questions through the website, its.nebraska.edu/oneit-initiative, and more information, planning sessions and other events will be shared with you in the coming weeks.
Again, later today at 3 p.m. an all-ITS video conference will take place to discuss the next phase of implementation. We hope to see you there and discuss any questions you may have.
Thank you again,
Mark Askren, Vice President for Information Technology, University of Nebraska and Vice Chancellor, UNL
Bret Blackman, Associate Vice President, University of Nebraska, and Chief Information Officer, UNO
Deb Schroeder, Assistant Vice President, University of Nebraska, and Chief Information Officer, UNK
