Beginning July 31 through August 2, Information Technology Services will be making updates to email accounts across the University of Nebraska system. These updates will set us up for future improvement projects and provide additional security benefits to users.
On Friday, July 31, ITS will be upgrading all faculty, staff and administrative Microsoft accounts at UNK, UNL and UNO from an A3 license to an A5 license. Users can anticipate no downtime and won’t need to take any action to utilize the new license. More information about this upgrade can be found further down this page.
On Sunday, August 2, all Nebraska.edu email mailboxes will be migrated from the current Office 365 email tenant into a new Office 365 tenant that is tied to our new central Active Directory. Skype for Business transitioning to Microsoft Teams
As part of the Nebraska.edu email migration, Skype for Business will transition to Microsoft Teams. Last fall, Microsoft announced the decommissioning of Skype for Business to be complete by July 2021. Due to this Microsoft is not allowing Skype for Business to be enabled in any newly created tenants.
What does this mean for you?
Instead of logging into Skype for Business, you will begin to utilize Microsoft Teams. Teams has a few options to interact: First, you can login into webmail.nebraska.edu and use the waffle in the top left to navigate to teams. Second, there is a desktop client which can be installed. Third, there is a mobile version (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/microsoft-teams/download-app). If your desktop is managed by ITS, Microsoft Teams should already be installed. If not, it can be installed via Self Service on Mac or Software Center on Windows.
You will still be able to utilize chat with users who are on Skype for Business, however it will now be through Teams.
To read more on Microsoft Teams, we have included a few links below. We will also be holding a training session in the coming weeks for all campus users to begin to get familiarized with Microsoft Teams.
